His Photography

Mark Fernley's African wildlife photography offers a unique perspective on the raw and intense nature on wildlife here in Africa. He has spent many years focusing on the emotional journeys that most African mammals have to face on this harsh yet stunning land of giants. Mark spends many months in remote parts of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, AND southern Africa where there photography draws them into capturing the harsh and unseen natural world. His ability to capture nature, continues to impress the public eye and inspire wildlife photography enthusiasts around the world.

His Eye on Detail

When it comes down to what lies in Marks images, detail is one of his key factors. During a recent interview, Mark A Fernley continued to talk about his eye for detail and how his most iconic animal to photograph was the African Hippopotamus. Mark talks about the overwhelming pressure that the lens has to face when absorbing the detail of the hippo and how his images have to be blown up as large prints and seen close up to fully appreciate the images value. With subtle and desaturated tones presented in Marks images, he continues to perform a rather dramatic yet comforting style that transforms reality into a mind puzzling and detailed frame in time.

His Focus on Minimalism

Many of Marks African wildlife captures clearly show a sign of minimalism. He is well known for his off set subjects placed carefully in frame with a unique open space of brightness that hold a lack of detail. His vacant spaces bring context to the frame and force the isolated subject to be the most important viewing point in the image. Mark is a wildlife photographer that continues to speak of not wanting to fill the image with unwanted subjects. In fact he persistently isolates the animal from the surroundings to help embrace the animal itself. Although most of his images are rather minimalistic, Mark also dives to the other end of the scale where he focuses on complete chaos. This is where his abstracts comes in and continue to impress.

Black and Whites

Diving into the world of black and white, Marks monochrome images bring a rather intimidating feel to the room. Mark states that his black and white wildlife photography is created to reduce distraction of colour and lead the viewers to focus directly on the animal in frame. His black and whites don't consist of even tones, he either over powers the image with intense whites around a subject or dominating blacks making his images stand out.

Getting Low

In his recent years, Mark has focused on getting low. This has a been a recent idea during his photographic safaris and in his personal photographic trips in the field. Photographic and underground hides have played a big part in his recent years and many have followed in bis foot steps. His wildlife photography has become ever growing in interest as he explores other interesting ways to make his viewers look up at animals and there for embracing the power of an animal in his images.
